For thousands of years horses have been trained with dominance and force; many people still believe there is no other way. Some modern trainers have introduced hands-off "horse whisperer" methods that work well, but still require great physical skill from the trainer. Clicker training takes things one step further, making positive, force-free training and handling possible for anyone who owns a horse.

Horse owners all over the world are discovering that clicker training is a wonderful way to solve behavior problems, train new skills, and just plain have more fun with a horse. You can use the clicker to teach your own horse, at any age, to stand still for grooming, shoeing, and vet care; to self-load onto trailers; to develop good manners; and to excel in performance.

Through her books and videos, our author and clicker pioneer Alexandra Kurland has taught thousands of people to be good to their horses, the clicker way, and to enjoy in return the very best the horse has to give. Karen Pryor

What is Clicker Training?
“Clicker training” is the popular term for the training or teaching method based on what we know about how living organisms learn.
Research has shown that any creature—whether a dog, cat, dolphin, parrot, fish, horse, llama, or person—is more likely to learn and repeat actions that result in consequences it desires and enjoys. So clicker trainers provide consequences desired by their animal in exchange for actions or behaviors desired by their trainers.
We call these consequences “rewards” and the process is called “reinforcement.” Clicker training, therefore, is a positive-reinforcement-based system of training.

 Teaching Empathy

The clicker trainer's epiphany has changed many lives, yet perhaps none so dramatically as the children and their parents with the good fortune to work with Lynn Loar, Ph.D. (a ClickerExpo faculty member), Libby Coleman, Ph.D., and their colleagues in the Strategic Humane Interventions Program (SHIP), an animal-assisted therapy program for families at risk of abuse and neglect.

In their new book and accompanying CD: Teaching Empathy: Animal-Assisted Therapy Programs for Children and Families Exposed to Violence (a Latham Foundation Publication, 2004), Loar and Coleman describe their innovative intervention approach and how it transforms family dynamics.  Clicker Training for Your Horse

By Alexandra Kurland

Now Alexandra Kurland’s classic volume on equine clicker training is available in a deluxe hardcover edition packed with full-color photographs. Produced by our British co-publisher, Ringpress, this special edition of Clicker Training for Your Horse will stand up to years of reading and reference. It also makes an elegant and enduring gift for every friend you would like to introduce to the power of clicker training.

Equus magazine, which recently featured Kurland and her book in a ten-page article, says clicker training is "a rare positive option, in an area where negatives have long prevailed. With the clicker providing immediate reinforcement and the promise of a paycheck to come, every little glimmer of desirable behavior can be rewarded and shaped into a working partnership." The editors say "Alexandra Kurland has learned that when horses become active partners in their own education, magical transformations take place.".
