"Remote from universal nature, and living bycomplicated artifice, man in civilization
surveys the creature through the glass of his
knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We
patronize them for their incompleteness, for their
tragic fate of having taken form so far below
ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. Henry Beston ©1928 |
Our newest rescue at Shadow Ridge. He is called Jack even though he is gelded. We will work on that name.
He just arrived on July 30, 2006. In this picture his original rescuer
had already put on 100 lbs on him. No one knows how old he is.
This picture show how his feet are so long and straight up and down that his is about to roll over on his toes. Our farrier has started a series of corrections. This was very painful for him since he virtually had to learn to walk and get his tendons stretched out so he would be back on his heels. His coffin bones are also really turned from previous foundering. From Jennifer who originally rescued him:
"Thanks for taking in
Jack and loving him.
I got him in February of
this year. He was so weak they had to drag him to the trailer. He
was living with too many animals in too small an area. We put at
least 100lbs on him if not more. I really feel that if I had not
gotten him that winter that he would have died. And the owners
probably would have just attributed it to the fact that he was
"old", not starved to death."
click his pictures to enlarge His bad eye. He looks like a different donkey from this side. He is Totally Blind on that side. Pieces of the eye are coming out. He is very good about me inspecting it many times a day. He isn't in pain for now. Eventually we will have to have it removed. I put in a medication from the vet to help with infection. PS I don't think is 'good' eye is all that great for seeing either but he knows where his Alice is all the time. On occasion, he even gets a little 'studly'. This picture and the one above of the eye was taken at his previous rescuer's. July 2006 Notice how his front feet were ready to 'break over'. His whole body was covered in scabs like he had been laying in fire ants. He took a long time to heal. When he arrived, even his bray was hoarse and weak. Not any more! Begs as bad as the rest of the herd now! You Go Jack!! |
"THE FEAR IS IN THE EYES AND THE MESSAGE IS,
"I HAVE BEEN ABUSED, MISTREATED,
& MY NORMAL LIGHT SPIRIT IS HIDING FROM FURTHER ABUSE". My Thanks to Ken Parker Butternut Ridge Farm - Thera-Pets, a ministry of animal therapy --one of my many wonderful donkey friends. Jack at Shadow Ridge one month, August 31, 2006 Jack likes Alice!!! She is his guide and protector. My Sweet Alice who is also a rescue-taken from her desert home by the BLM. She will stare and watch you all day long. Deep dark soulful eyes. Jack 5/2007 in his fly protection leggings. He is very happy.
