Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth Natural Insecticide Products with Pyrethrum

-the Natural Choice and Safe Alternative to Insect Control.

and  Product Label Information

Our products do not use strong poisons or experimental chemicals to kill insects, they kill “mechanically”. They cut, and puncture the insects exoskeleton and drain their vital fluid. Because of this, we have never heard of any insects being able to develop immunity to our products as they do to chemical insecticides. In fact, insects are developing immunity to traditional insecticides at an alarming rate today. Because our products kill mechanically, we believe that our products are the best and surest option for killing insects.

How does it work?
To insects DE is a lethal dust with microscopic razor sharp edges.  Under a powerful microscope the tiny sharp edges can be seen, but to the touch, it feels like chalk dust or flour. These sharp edges cut through the insect's protective covering drying it out and killing them when they are either dusted with DE or if it applied as a wet powder spray. If they ingest the DE it will shred their insides. It does not have to be dry to work, but it works better dry.

Household D-20
For control of roaches, silverfish, ants, bedbugs, flies, fleas, box elder bugs, scorpions, crickets, and many others!
Perma-Guard Household product is licensed to be used in and around the home, yard, animal housing, etc. It can be applied as a dry dust, or mixed with water at the rate of 2 oz. per quart and sprayed as a liquid.

Perma-Guard insecticides have passed exhaustive tests, many of them under the scrutiny of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Kansas State University, and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Over the years these products have scored dramatic successes in protecting homes and industrial plants from insect infestations, without the addition of any chlorinated phosphates, systemic poisons or chemical compounds commonly found in almost all commercial insecticides. With environmental issues a concern to all of us, the Perma-Guard company has become a revolution in the insecticide field.

While other insecticides kill chemically, insects usually over time develop an immunity to the chemicals, Perma-Guard insecticides kill bugs physically and insects have not yet developed immunity to a physical action. Perma-Guard insecticides are certain death to insects because they kill by actually puncturing the insect's exoskeleton, disrupting it's soft waxy shell structure, chewing up its digestive organs and causing death in a short time by dehydration. In addition to the action of the diatomaceous earth on bugs and insects, which is certainly non-toxic to humans and animals, Perma-Guard insecticides also contain Pyrethrum, a vegetable, digestible extract from a variety of Chrysanthemum flowers that is deadly poison to insects and other forms of cold blooded life, but virtually non-toxic to warm-blooded life.

Another ingredient used in Perma-Guard's household insecticide and pet powder (an effective flea/tick/mite application for animals, from pets to buffalo to ratites) is Piperonyl Butoxide, which was first discovered in Sassafras plants. Although an insecticide in it's own right, Piperonyl Butoxide's greatest value is that it multiplies the action of Pyrethrum by a power of ten! Due to their ingredients, Perma-Guard insecticides have a remarkable repellency factor that is ever-present in any environment in which they are regularly used. Bugs just don't feel welcome.

Aside from Perma-Guard's household insecticide, proven effective against ants, roaches, silverfish, crickets, fleas, bedbugs, certain types of beetles, box elder bugs and useful in protecting exposed, stored food against insect pests, Perma-Guard also makes a D-10 insecticide for grain or seed storage. Field crops can be protected from insect damage too. by applying Perma-Guard systematically throughout the growing season. The wise grower will apply prior to insect infestation. And, get this! Perma-Guard insecticide products, which have been proven to be effective when used in a prescribed crop application program, also can be used safely, even to the day of harvest!

If you are trying to treat your animals and buildings for fleas, ticks, flies, and termites, I strongly suggest that you buy the insecticide. It comes in one pound bags, 5# bags, 30# bags and in 5 oz puffer bottles. If you buy it in bags, you can mix it with water and spray it from a pump up type garden sprayer. A little goes a very long way.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

and  Product Label Information

D-20 Insecticide Products main ingredient is food grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Insects are not built like higher forms of life. They do not have blood vessels, only a body cavity that holds fluid. If they lose as little as 10% of fluids, they die. DE helps them lose that vital 10% or more. Most insects have a “waxy” coating on the outside of their shell. The small DE particles puncture through the waxy coating, causing the insect to dehydrate and die! This is all physical, NOT CHEMICAL!

The second ingredient is Pyrethrin, a natural vegetable extract from a variety of Chrysanthemum flowers.

The third ingredient is Piperonyl Butoxide, another natural vegetable extract first discovered in Sassafras and pepper plants. It is used as a synergist to magnify the effects of Pyrethrin. A small amount of this is added to DE to add a quick killing, long lasting insecticide that is a very effective alternative to conventional chemicals.

D-20 – Packaged as Household Insecticide, Pet & Animal Product, Commercial Insecticide, and Fire Ant Product (Has 0.02 percent Pyrethrum). D-20 – As a quicker knockdown and quicker kill for all types of insects. Can be applied wet or dry.

Perma-Guard D-20 Insecticide Products

D-21 – Packaged as Garden and Plant Product and Farm and Field Product. (Has 0.01 % Pyrethrum).D-21 – For gardens, plants and hydroponics to kill insects. Apply wet or dry.

HOUSEHOLD - The Household formula is effective against roaches, silverfish, ants, flies, bedbugs, fleas, box elder bugs, etc. in the home. Comes in five ounce puffer bottle, one, five and 30 pound bags. Application - It is best applied with the puffer bottle. Locate the area of infestation and lightly dust the cross paths of the insects. The powder sticks to insects as they come in contact with the product. Small microscopic spikes penetrate their exoskeleton thereby distributing the microscopic particles through their digestive organs. This causes death in a short time through dehydration. The average time for an insect to be immobilized is five to ten minutes. Application instructions

GARDEN & PLANT - The Garden and Plant formula is useful to protect plants against a vast number of insects as listed on the label whether around the home or in the fields. It can be used on food crops even on the day of harvest. Comes in five ounce puffer bottle, two and 20 pound bags. Application - Indoors, apply the product with the puffer bottle, dusting the paths or areas of infestation. This is commonly under the leaf system. Outdoors, depending on the size of your garden, apply using the puffer bottle, lightly dusting the vegetation and leaf system. Water will wash away the product but the residue will remain active. Best applied while plants are dry. Can be applied the same day as harvest and it will not harm human or animal life. Application instructions

PET & ANIMAL - The Pet & Animal formula is effective against fleas, tics, and lice on animals.(D-20 household formula may be substituted)  Instructions on the label should be followed to make certain of effectiveness. Should also be applied to animal sleeping areas. Comes in five ounce puffer bottle, one, two and 30 pound bags. Application - Using the puffer bottle, apply a dusting to your pets coat. Brush or rub into the dander of the coat and apply liberally as the thickness of the fur requires. Look for results and brush or bathe your pet as necessary to remove any dead fleas or tics. Be sure to treat pets sleeping areas as insects will live there waiting for the pet to return. Reapply after bathing on dry fur as a preventative. Use as often as necessary. A light residue does remain until area is washed or vacuumed.

If you suspect that your warm blooded pet already has fleas or other external pests, you can shake a little D-20  Pet and Animal directly on the pet and use your hands to rub it into their coat. Don't forget to apply in and around their bedding area also.  If your pet is important to you, don't use dangerous, toxic flea collars or chemical wormers, use a natural, safe and effective alternative. What you want to do with DE is apply a very light coating. If you are applying it in a way that you are kicking up visible dust, you are putting WAY too much down. See also: Livestock and Pets

FIRE ANT - The Fire Ant formula kills Fire Ants and a great many other insects. Use wet or dry according to the instructions on the label. Comes in five ounce puffer bottle, two and 30 pound bags. Application - It is best applied with the puffer bottle. Locate the area of infestation and lightly dust the cross paths of the ants. Locate nest if possible and dust liberally around the opening. See also:  Fire Ants and Get the Queen

Perma-Guard Insecticide Application Instructions:

Perma-Guard Household Insecticide can be applied using any equipment to handle dust or powder, whether it be hand or power operated.

Roaches and Silverfish
*In most cases, general application is not needed, but one needs to give localized attention to cracks and crevices, under stoves and refrigerators, and in likely hiding places. Be sure to treat around sinks and drain pipes.
*If there is an opening into the sewer line, blow a considerable amount of product into the line. Being closed, air pressure forces the dust further down the line, coating the upper half of the pipe, leaving no safe place for roaches. This protection exists as far as the line is coated.

Ants
*
Dry Powder: Stir the mound with a rake or other tool, agitating the ants. Apply Perma-Guard Household Insecticide dust liberally on the immediate area, contacting as many ants as possible. Repeat if needed for final results.
* Wet Application: Use one-half scup of Perma-Guard Household Insecticide with one tablespoon of a mild detergent per gallon of water. Saturate the mound or bed with the entire gallon of mixture. Repeat if necessary.

Bedbugs-click here

Carpet Beetles

Thoroughly dust along baseboards, carpet edges, under furniture, carpet, and rugs, and in closets and shelving.

Crickets, Scorpions, and Box Elder Bugs
Lightly dust areas around windows, doors and other places where pests may enter.

Fire Ants (also see Fire Ants- "Killing the Ants, Get the Queen")

Fleas
* Animal Application: Apply Perma-Guard Household Insecticide liberally to all parts of animal, close to skin.
* Rugs: Make a thin coating on the rug. Rake (not sweep) nap back and forth, causing dust to enter the rug. Leave overnight. When cleaning, do not make a special effort to remove the dust in the rug. It will kill live fleas, repel others, and will deodorize the carpet.

Flies
Lightly coat window sills so flies lighting will contact the dust. If the outside walls of the house, shrubbery, outbuildings (such as barns, stables, kennels or corrals) are dusted, flies are greatly reduced. Repeat if needed. Thoroughly dust areas where flies frequent (walls, straw bedding, livestock pens). It also can be applied to livestock coat as an insect repellent/contact insecticide.

Outside Area
Apply 8 to 16 oz. of dust per 1000 sq. ft. of the yard. Two or three applications per year should do the job. This can be done as dry dust or as wettable powder, using suitable equipment

Indoor and Outdoor Application: Sprinkle a light layer of DE in areas where pests frequent, including under stoves, cabinets, sinks, garbage cans, window and door frames and sills, entrance ways, sewer pipes and drains, and in cracks and crevices. Repeat treatment as needed.
For Carpet Beetles: Thoroughly dust along baseboards, carpet edges, under furniture, carpet, and rugs, and in closets and shelving.
For Bedbugs : Take apart bed and dust joints and channels. Dust any hollow tubing and the interior framework as well as the mattress and all cracks in the room.
For Fleas: Thoroughly dust carpets and pet's bedding and sleeping areas, as well as cracks and baseboards. It also can be rubbed into your pet's fur.
For Flies: Thoroughly dust areas where flies frequent (walls, straw bedding, livestock pens). It also can be applied to livestock coat as an insect repellent/contact insecticide.

Perma-Guard Household product is licensed to be used in for pest control and around the home, yard, animal housing, etc. It can be applied as a dry dust, or mixed with water at the rate of 2 oz. per quart and sprayed as a liquid.

Plant and Garden Pesticide

For control of aphids, whitefly, beetles, loopers, mites, leaf hoppers, adult flea beetles, sawfly, coddling moth, twig borer, thrips, mites, cockroach, slugs, snails, earwigs, silverfish, and ants. Can be used for bedbugs, cabbage root flies, carrot root flies, fleas, pillbugs, ticks and is helpful in dealing with fungus gnats.  For use in the greenhouse or outdoors on fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains and grass--up to and including day of harvest.

Dry Application

The goal is to get coverage over the entire plant, especially under the leaves. For young plants, as little as two pounds per acre may be adequate. For larger plants, five lb/acre is probably sufficient. With extra growth, it might be necessary to increase the amount. An examination of the leaves will tell if the leaf bottom is covered.
Applicator:
A good dust applicator is essential, and should be equipped with electronic nozzles, which put a negative charge on the dust. The plant being positive, attracts the dust making for a better coverage even ion leaf bottom.

Wet Application

The same rates per acre apply when using as a water and  powder mixture. Adding water is merely a means of using existing spray equipment and can be used by making a thin slurry of DE and water. This method can you give precise coverage and when it dries the DE goes to work. A slurry can also be used as a "paint" on tree trunks to discourage insects and to give sunscald protection to the bark. A slurry paint may also be useful in deterring borers from laying eggs on bark.

Mixing Instructions:

For Fruit Trees:

We use 8 oz per Gallon  or 2 1/2 lbs per Acre and find it to be very effective.

Minimum: 1 lb. to 2 gals. water
Maximum: 1 lb. to 25 gals. water

The purpose is to get a solution that will flow easily through the nozzle and still put the recommended amount of product per acre. Again, it is essential to get coverage on the underside of the leaf.
Garden and Yard Plants

The same specifications apply. Get coverage on top and bottom of leaf. Apply either wet or dry.
Applicators

A variety of units are available, from small hand held units, to backpacks. Some are capable of applying either wet or dry product

Application Rates:

1/2 pound will treat 200 to 250 square feet

1 pound will treat 400 to 500 square feet

5 pounds will treat 2,000 to 2,500 square feet.

Pastures: Use 10 to 15 lbs. per acre (a little less on a very calm day).

Crops: Dust after a rain or after heavy dew to increase sticking of the powder. Dust plant upward from the ground, covering all stems, top and underside of leaves.

Rows: Use 4 lbs. per acre injected over seed.

Gardens: 3 lbs per acre. Mixing instructions on the bag.

Enclosed Areas: Use 1/2 to 3/4 lb. per 1000 sq. ft. Hang dust bags in doorways of barns.

Lawn and Garden: Sprinkle in areas where insects are present.

IPM FOR FLEAS IN SCHOOLS

http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/ipm/schoolipm/chap-8.pdf

Diatomaceous Earth and Silica Aerogel
These are insecticidal dusts that can be used for flea
control. Diatomaceous earth is made from fossilized
diatoms, and silica gel is produced essentially from
sand. Both these products kill insects by desiccation;
they absorb the wax and oil from the insect’s outer
covering which causes dehydration and death. Although
these materials are not poisonous to humans
directly, the fine dust travels freely through the air and
can be irritating to the eyes and lungs; therefore, use a
dust mask and goggles during application. Silica gel
and diatomaceous earth are also formulated with pyrethrins
(discussed below).
How to Use Diatomaceous Earth and Silica Aerogel
• Apply a light dusting to upholstered furniture that is
suspected of harboring fleas. Be sure to get into the
cracks and crevices.
• Apply a light dusting to rugs or pet bedding.
• Apply to infested carpeting, leave for a couple of
days, and then vacuum up.
• Dust into crawl spaces, wall voids, attics, and other
similar spaces where you suspect animals of nesting
or resting.
• Do not use in moist environments; neither material
works well when wet.

CHAPTER 6
IPM FOR COCKROACHES IN SCHOOLS
http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/ipm/schoolipm/chap-6.pdf

Resistance to Insecticides
Insecticide resistance in cockroaches is a growing
problem. Many residual poisons no longer affect
cockroaches. So far, there is no documented resistance
to boric acid, diatomaceous earth, or silica gel, and
because of the way these insecticides work, resistance in
the future is unlikely.

Diatomaceous Earth and Silica Aerogel
These are insecticidal dusts that can be used for roach
control, but they are more repellent to roaches than boric
acid. Diatomaceous earth is made from fossilized
diatoms, and silica gel is produced essentially from
sand. Both kill insects by desiccation; they absorb the
wax and oil from the insect’s outer covering, which
causes dehydration and death. Although these materials
are not poisonous to humans directly, the fine dust
travels freely through the air and can be irritating to the
eyes and lungs; therefore, use a dust mask and goggles
during application.
Diatomaceous earth and silica aerogel are especially
useful in wall voids and similar closed spaces. During
construction and remodeling these dusts can be blown
into such spaces, and in finished buildings they can be
applied by drilling tiny holes in the walls. These dusts
are also useful in crack and crevice treatments.
Some products combine diatomaceous earth or silica gel
with pyrethrins. The pyrethrins provide a quick knockdown.

Pyrethrins
Pyrethrins are the active ingredients extracted from the pyrethrum daisy, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium. Pyrethrins are commonly used in structural pest control.

Terminology
Pyrethrum refers to the dried, powdered, flower heads of the pyrethrum daisy.

Pyrethrins are the group of active ingredients found in the flowers. Pyrethrins are unstable when exposed to sunlight. They last for only a few hours.

Pyrethroids are synthetic compounds made to resemble pyrethrins in chemical structure. Pyrethroids are more toxic to insects and more stable in sunlight than pyrethrins. They last for a week or longer in the environment.

DE and Slug control: Control weeds. Keep area free of debris. Proper plant spacing. Horticultural grade diatomaceous earth. (Needs to be reapplied if it gets wet.)

Mode of Action

Pyrethrins are nerve toxins. They work as a contact poison and cause quick paralysis in insects. Pyrethrins are known for their quick 'knockdown' effect and because they drive insects out of hiding places.

Many insects can detoxify pyrethrins and recover from exposure, therefore a synergist is often added to the formulation to help the pyrethrins work effectively. Piperonyl butoxide, a common synergist, is derived from sesame. It works by inhibiting the activity of enzymes in the insect that normally detoxify pesticides.
